What Is Asthma
Asthma is a chronic disease that affects your breathing by constricting airways of the human body.
Airways are tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. Asthma causes the inside walls of the bodyβs airways, which become sore, swollen, and sensitive. These airways may react to allergens, things that patient is allergic to, or irritants. When triggered by irritants or allergies, airways get get narrower and subsequently the lungs take in less air.
Symptoms of Asthma
Wheezing
Coughing, especially early in the morning or at night
Chest tightness
Shortness of breath
It is important to note that, not all people who have asthma have these symptoms. We diagnose asthma through a thorough examination; lung function tests, medical history, and a physical exam. You may also have allergy tests.
When your symptoms become worse than usual, itβs called an asthma attack. Severe attacks may require emergency care, and they can be fatal.
Asthma is treated with two kinds of treatments: quick-relief to stop symptoms and long-term control to prevent symptoms.
